We are right in the middle of the season of giving and while it is wonderful and enriching to be able to help others, we must be watchful that our kindness is not taken advantage of.
Here are some resources you can use to be sure your donations are going where you intend:
• Charity Watch (brought to you by the American Institute of Philanthropy), is a charity watchdog that rates charities based on how efficiently and effectively they use donations to fund the programs they support. They have tips on how to give wisely, how to reduce unwanted mail, phone appeals and more.
• Charity Navigator is another resource that aims to advance a more efficient and responsive philanthropic marketplace, in which givers and the charities they support work in tandem to overcome our nation’s and the world’s most persistent challenges. Their website offers top ten lists, tips and info on hot topics in charitable giving.
• CNBC gives insight with an article “It’s the way you donate that counts.”
There is no doubt that giving makes us feel great. So go ahead, be generous this holiday season, just be sure to do your homework and make those decisions with both your head and your heart. Happy giving!
