Donna Cooper, Executive Director, The Springs at Mill Creek
Bringing my own mother in our community, this past year, showed me the importance of providing a steady stream of emotional support. The move-in process requires time to adapt and feel comfortable. It’s much more than an introduction. It’s a daily commitment of love and support.
At The Springs Living communities, we have adopted an attitude of Making a Difference and we use the story of the Starfish (adapted from The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley) as our guide. The story goes like this:
An old man, walking on a beach after a big storm, saw the shore littered with thousands of starfish. They were beached and dying. He then noticed a young man picking them up and flinging them back into the ocean. “Why do you bother?” Ask the old man. “There must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. You won’t be able to make much of a difference.” The boy bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the ocean and said “It made a difference to that one.”
And that is what we do. We want to touch everyone, every day and make a difference in their life by providing love and support.
